How Our E-Bikes Work

Whether you've never ridden an electric bike before, or you have one at home, all electric bikes are a little bit different. That's why we provide a demonstration when you pick up your bikes showing how our bikes work and how to use them.

Pick a Mode and Pedal!

Both of our bicycles are pedal assist, meaning you pedal them like a normal bike and the bike does the hard work for you. Simply flick between the 4 assistance modes (Low, Normal, High or Power) to suit the terrain and level of help, using the + and - buttons as seen in the photo.

Boost Throttle

One feature that sets our bikes apart is the boost throttle, located underneath the display screen. It overrides the assistance level that you have put the bike in and provides the equivalent amount of assistance as the "Power" mode. This is perfect for zooming up hills without needing to change modes. This simple spring-loaded thumb-throttle can be completely ignored if it seems a bit overwhelming, however, it is thoroughly loved by those who use it.

Walk Assist

The boost throttle has a secondary feature which is only activated when you aren't pedalling - the walk assist. When walking alongside the bike, push the thumb-throttle to engage a small 3-4mph assistance to help push the bike. This feature is ideal for crossing La Coupée, the narrow path connecting the main island of Sark with Little Sark, where it is prohibited to cycle. The causeway is dipped in the middle and steep on either side, so pushing an electric bike across can be hard work, but with the walk assist, this is made easy.

Bike-Specific FAQs

How long will the battery last?

Both the Burlington and the Alpine batteries last approximately 60 miles or 95 kilometers. Usually, this is plenty of charge to last 3-4 days exploring Sark. You can monitor a gauge on the display which shows you the level of charge you have.

What happens if I get a puncture?

No need to fret, just like if you were to run out of charge, we will come straight out to rescue you! Simply give us a call, describe where you are, and we'll come out to you with a replacement bike. Rather than waste time repairing the bike for you, we'd prefer for you to get going again as soon as possible! Of course, this service is completely free of charge.

Am I too short to ride your bikes?

We don't have an exact min/max rider height for either of our bikes as the ability to safely ride our bikes depends on a couple of variables such as leg length, cycling confidence, and seat height preference. We can only suggest you try on the day. If you are a less-confident or shorter rider, we would suggest reserving a Burlington.

What happens if my battery runs out of charge?

Both bikes feature display screens that show the remaining battery charge, allowing you to monitor whether you're close to running out. If you have enough charge to return to our centrally located bike shop, we’ll quickly and effortlessly swap your battery for a fully charged one and get you back on your way. However, if you happen to run out of charge while you're out and about, simply give us a call, and we’ll happily bring a replacement battery to you. And, don't worry, this service is completely free of charge!

What's the minimum age you rent bikes to?

For safety reasons, all of our riders must be aged 18 or over.

Do you only rent electric bikes?

Yes, we decided to only hire electric bicycles because we believe they are the best way to explore the island. You can go further and faster without expending almost any energy at all! This allows our riders to save their energy for where our bikes can't take them, such as down to one of the many gorgeous beaches, around the picturesque walking trails, or through the breathtaking woods.
